U.N. chief says no motion on U.N. Iran sanctions as a consequence of ‘uncertainty’

NEW YORK, Sept 19 (Reuters) – United Nations Secretary-Fundamental Antonio Guterres instructed the Security Council on Saturday he cannot take any movement on a U.S. declaration that all U.N. sanctions on Iran had been reimposed because of “there would seem like uncertainty” on the problem.

U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo talked about last month that he triggered a 30-day course of on the council ensuing within the return of U.N. sanctions on Iran on Saturday evening that may moreover stop a conventional arms embargo on Tehran from expiring on Oct. 18.

Nevertheless 13 of the 15 Security Council members say Washington’s switch is void because of Pompeo used a mechanism agreed beneath a 2015 nuclear deal between Iran and world powers, which the US quit in 2018.

U.N. officers current administrative and technical assist to the Security Council to implement its sanctions regimes and Guterres appoints neutral specialists to look at implementation. He talked about that “pending clarification” of the standing of the Iran sanctions, he would not take any movement to provide that assist.

Washington argues it triggered the return of sanctions – commonly known as “snapback” – because of a U.N. choice that enshrines the pact nonetheless names it as a participant. Diplomats say few worldwide areas usually tend to reimpose the measures lifted beneath the 2015 deal that aimed to stop Iran from creating nuclear weapons.

“If U.N. Member States fail to satisfy their obligations to implement these sanctions, the US is able to make use of our house authorities to impose penalties for these failures,” Pompeo talked about in an announcement on Saturday.

He talked about that inside the coming days Washington would announce additional measures to strengthen the implementation of the U.N. sanctions and “preserve violators accountable.” The US is trying to push Iran to barter a model new care for Washington.

Russia’s Deputy U.N. Ambassador Dmitry Polyanskiy responded on Twitter, “All of us clearly talked about in August that U.S. claims to set off snapback are illegitimate. Is Washington deaf?”

Longtime U.S. allies Britain, France and Germany instructed the council on Friday that U.N. sanctions help for Iran would proceed and that any decision or movement taken to reimpose U.N. sanctions “could possibly be incapable of licensed influence.”

Iran’s U.N. Ambassador Majid Takht Ravanchi talked about on Twitter on Saturday, “U.S. illegal and false ‘deadline’ has come and gone … Swimming in the direction of worldwide currents will solely ship it further isolation.”
