New Caledonia has rejected an independence referendum which might have led it to chop ties with France.

The southwest Pacific archipelago voted on whether or not it needed independence from France following a three-decade decolonisation effort.

The “no” camp gained 53.26% of the vote, after provisional outcomes earlier confirmed it was edging forward.

It means New Caledonia will now stay a French territory.
